Note from a Wikitree visitor dirkljongejan@online.nl on March 21, 2015 :
Hi, I reached these data through Adelheid van Voorne's daughter Maria van Merwede. I am dutch and know most of the names as villages and former villages 25 - 40 miles from where I was born. Starting with Unarchsdr. this is not a name but a patronym. so she was a daughter of Unarch, not a common name nowadays but not uncommon in the eleventh century in the south west of the Netherlands. Evidently her real first name was lost somewhere in transcription but it gives us her father as Unarch van Naaldwijk. Dates of births in this period for children of the lowest nobility or near nobility are almost all estimates, based on later facts, as marriage, signing as witness etc. The gap between the dates of birth between this lady and her husband is thirty years. Very much to expect much chance of children. Much older brides were possible if they were heiresses. This was what I am looking for as I need to find how the (low) Merwede title entered the (higher) Brederode family. As the title of Unarch van Naaldwijk is not reappearing, his daughter appears not to have been an Heiress. Without the territory, a 30 year older bride becomes rather questionable. Remember, only some county seats as Leiden did get their first ring forts in the second half of the eleventh century in the low lands. Bricks were very pricy and natural stone was not quarried less than 100-150 miles away. so these people lived in wooden farmhouses, not castles and could read nor write. Most lower nobility data in the low lands become very questionable in this era, several houses claimed to descend from e.g. bears as late as the end of the ninth century. Try to pursue data from the rhineland, or france where older noble houses did have more reliable data much further back in history. The early noble families from Holland did have many marital links with the Rhineland through Kleve, Altena and Cuyck or with France through Hainaut and Flanders. There you are likely to find well documented carolingian links that bring you back to Charlemagne, Charles Martel and possibly, through the Visigoths to the east roman emperors. In the swamps of Holland, not much is reliable outside the few counts and bisshops before 1300. You also refer to Heer in one occasion as a first name. Actually it is a title like Lord, but in that area of Holland unlikely to have existed untill about three generations later. Most nobility to be had achieved some administrative or military job on behalf or a local abbey or priory by 1100. they did not yet control territory but did have a certain position allowing influence. It really took time before the orderly feodal system started to function in the swampy area that was Holland. Compare it to policing the Louisiana bayous, it takes much longer to achieve and such area's are not the best base for reliable genealogy either. The stories behind these data may well be hundreds of years old but more embellished antique fables good for internal family use than realistic genealogy. Titles appear is such stories well before the dates in which they appear in contemporary documents. For the reasons given above, I doubt any proof through contemporary documents can be found for the data. Without such proof many of us consider such data non valid in genealogy. Sorry, I have a nice line directly from a Titan in Greek mythology myself, but not to be published as genealogy. Hope you understand my concerns Dick
